In April 2005 and May 2006, Siemens and the Russian railway operator RZD
signed contracts for the development and construction of high speed trains and
for their maintenance over a period of 30 years. The project includes the
delivery of initially eight high speed trainsets and calls for the
characteristics of all components and systems to be adapted to the specific
climatic requirements and to the standards of the Russian Federation.
These ten-car trainsets are intended for service on all high speed lines
of the Russian Federation, starting with the Moscow - St Petersburg line. They
are based on the world’s most advanced high speed technology and characterised
by an attractive design. RZD President Vladimir Yakunin kicked off body
production of the first Russian Velaro RUS high speed train on 20 July 2007
during a visit to the Siemens site in Krefeld-Uerdingen in Germany. The trains
are set to connect Moscow and St Petersburg from the end of 2009, travelling at
speeds up to 250 km/h between the two metropolises.
With the Velaro®
RUS, passengers will be able to travel comfortably in a pleasant indoor climate,
which is ensured by air-conditioning systems from MERAK in Spain.
Due to
the high demands placed on the air-conditioning unit, which must withstand
outside temperatures that can get as low as -50°C, only top quality components
are used in the unit. When it came time to choose a refrigerant compressor, a
semi-hermetic compressor from BOCK was selected. |
“We supply compressors that are produced at our German headquarters and
feature dependable oil pump lubrication, ensuring reliable operation even at
extreme conditions of -50°C,“ explains Marcus Reuß, BOCK Key Account Manager
Railway Applications.
The compressors used have a proven design. Many
more than 10,000 compressors of this size of are already in use across the
globe. BOCK is a global provider of refrigerant compressors for air-conditioning
in rail vehicles, buses and transport refrigeration systems and supplies a full
range of products for all applications. In addition to semi-hermetic compressors
for high speed trains, carriages, regional trains and metros, the range also
includes open compressors for locomotives and diesel trainsets. Furthermore,
Bock provides innovative products such as compact CO2 compressors for
next-generation train air-conditioning units and lightweight aluminium
compressors customised for rail applications.
“As a medium-sized
company, we can also implement requests from our customers when batch sizes are
smaller, which was also the case for the compressors for the SIEMENS VELARO® RUS
high speed train,” explains Marcus Reuß.
